LaVigne, Executive Director of the Make-A-Wish Foundation®
of Northeast New York, conveyed to members of the Hoosick Area
Chamber of Commerce the importance of hope in the life an ill
child, and how Make-A-Wish encourages children and their families
to maintain their hope and strength. LaVigne was the guest speaker
at a recent Chamber meeting.
The mission of Make-A-Wish Foundation is to enrich the human experience
with hope, strength and joy, LaVigne said, by granting wishes
to children who have life-threatening illnesses. Over the last
two decades 18,000 Make-A-Wish volunteers have granted wishes
to 80,000 children world-wide.

BRYAN
LAVIGNE,
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION OF NORTHEAST NEW YORK

|
The
foundation began its work 20 years ago, when it granted the wish
of an Iowa youngster to become a police officer. He became
the first-ever honorary state trooper in Arizona, said LaVigne.
After he died, he was given a full police burial.
Children
with life-threatening illnesses between the ages of 2½
to 18 are eligible for referral to Make-A-Wish to have their wish
granted. There is no family financial criteria, LaVigne said.
The foundation also provides emotional support to families. We
offer a caring community to the families, he said. We
let them know that there are other people out there who care when
your world seems to be falling apart.
Make-A-Wish Foundation is financed entirely with private donations.
It does not solicit funds, and LaVigne asked that any telemarketing
by groups with similar-sounding names be reported to him. The
foundation does not directly contact the families of ill children.
All the children it serves are referred by family members, health
care professionals, school nurses and teachers, etc. He asked
Chamber members to contact him if they know of any children who
may be eligible.
Please help spread the word, he said. We rely
on others to call us. He said also that volunteers are always
needed. Volunteers make the Make-A-Wish Foundation work.
Make-A-Wish
Foundation® of Northeast New York is located at 1275 Broadway,
Albany, NY 12204. The phone number is 518-455-WISH, and the e-mail
address is neny@wish.org. Their
website is www.wish.org.

JIM
MONAHAN TO RUN FOR
RENSSELAER COUNTY LEGISLATURE
Jim
Monahan, owner of Thorpe's Pharmacy in Hoosick Falls, and Chairman
of the Hoosick Area Chamber of Commerce, announced his candidacy
for a seat on the Rensselaer County Legislature representing District
5, which includes the towns of Hoosick, Petersburgh, Grafton,
Berlin and Stephentown and the Village of Hoosick Falls.
Jim told Chamber members that he supports the Chamber's policy
to be nonpartisan, and if elected, he would resign his seat on
the Board of Directors. But he assured us that he will continue
to be actively involved in Chamber projects.
As a the owner of a busy pharmacy, with clients and customers
throughout the legislative district, Jim has a unique perspective
on the needs, interests and concerns of residents. As a County
Legislator Jim intends to focus his efforts on the changing Rensselaer
County economy, to help maintain job security for county residents.
Id like to see more government initiatives applied
to long-range planning that will benefit the towns in our district,
Jim said. I would also encourage upgrades to our senior
citizen centers to promote wider use of these much-needed facilities.
A well-known community activist, Jim is also a trustee at Hudson
Valley Community College, treasurer of the Town of Hoosick Community
Center, and a trustee of the Reynolds Foundation. He supports
and encourages a broad range of community-based projects and is
widely recognized for his energy, compassion, and his ability
to achieve results.
A native of Hoosick Falls, Jim is a 1976 graduate of the Albany
College of Pharmacy, and has been a practicing pharmacist since
1976. Jim lives in Hoosick Falls with his wife Colleen, and their
three children.

to expand the food hours to 6 pm every day during football season,
she said.
Her menu includes ½ -pound Bak burgers, marinated
chicken breast sandwiches and other great hot and cold over-stuffed
specialties, all including heaping sides of pasta salad, potato
salad, chips, etc. Prices range from $5 to $8. Others items will
be added, she said, including soups and depending on the weather.
Her ultimate goal is to recreate some of the Saluzzo family specialties,
including their famous soups.
