Bryan LaVigne, Executive Director of the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Northeast New York, conveyed to members of the Hoosick Area Chamber of Commerce the importance of hope in the life an ill child, and how Make-A-Wish encourages children and their families to maintain their hope and strength. LaVigne was the guest speaker at a recent Chamber meeting.

The mission of Make-A-Wish Foundation is to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy, LaVigne said, by granting wishes to children who have life-threatening illnesses. Over the last two decades 18,000 Make-A-Wish volunteers have granted wishes to 80,000 children world-wide.

BRYAN LAVIGNE,
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION OF NORTHEAST NEW YORK

The foundation began its work 20 years ago, when it granted the wish of an Iowa youngster to become a police officer. “He became the first-ever honorary state trooper in Arizona,” said LaVigne. “After he died, he was given a full police burial.”

Children with life-threatening illnesses between the ages of 2½ to 18 are eligible for referral to Make-A-Wish to have their wish granted. There is no family financial criteria, LaVigne said. The foundation also provides emotional support to families. “We offer a caring community to the families,” he said. “We let them know that there are other people out there who care when your world seems to be falling apart.”

Make-A-Wish Foundation is financed entirely with private donations. It does not solicit funds, and LaVigne asked that any telemarketing by groups with similar-sounding names be reported to him. The foundation does not directly contact the families of ill children. All the children it serves are referred by family members, health care professionals, school nurses and teachers, etc. He asked Chamber members to contact him if they know of any children who may be eligible.
“Please help spread the word,” he said. “We rely on others to call us.” He said also that volunteers are always needed. “Volunteers make the Make-A-Wish Foundation work.”

Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Northeast New York is located at 1275 Broadway, Albany, NY 12204. The phone number is 518-455-WISH, and the e-mail address is neny@wish.org. Their website is www.wish.org.
